The Riot Grrl scene emerged in the early '90s, but had faded as a driving force in popular culture by the end of the decade. Looking back, most associate the Riot Grrl movement mainly with music, and although the music entered the popular culture, it's fair to say that much of the feminist message has been lost.

Riot grrrls also wanted self-definition through the written word and promoted a female-centered version of punk's DIY politics.
