Triggs, in Garden Craft in Europe, says that the clairvoyée was, despite its French name, "a purely Dutch invention. Placed at the end of an alley, it consists of two or more brick piers with an ornamental iron grille between, to extend the garden view to the country beyond, perhaps to some church steeple or other feature of the landscape."
