Of the nine big-river species in the clade, which have not caused simuliotoxicosis, at least three (S. cholodkovskii, S. jenningsi Malloch, and S. penobscotense Snoddy & Bauer) are major, but nonlethal, annoyance pests of humans and domesticated animals.
