This prohibition was already present in Leviticus 21:18, where it is written that men with charum, that is, men with flat noses, cannot become priests in the temple. In canon law the loss of a nose could plausibly mean the termination of a marriage. Would a new nose reinstate one, the rhinoplast Otto Hildebrand mused a few centuries later?
