Heavy industry developed in the 1970s at Taiwan's other main cities: Jilong, Taizhong, and Gaoxiung. Jilong, 25 km. east of Taipei, is located near Taiwan's main coal deposit, which has an annual yield of about 2.5 million metric tons.
