Oil China has made great strides in oil production. It is the fifth largest producer in the world. Proven oil reserves for China are ranked ninth in the world, similar to the United States, with up to 24 billion barrels. The country, which is the third largest consumer in the world, became self-sufficient in 1965. This was, in part, because of a large oil field discovered in the northern Northeast China Plain.
