Leyden was essentially of the old and dying school, a versifier like Pope, but not a poet, a jingler of rhymes and a selecter of appropriate epithets and artistic scenes, but destitute of self-unconsciousness, of natural elegance, of aesthetic culture, of deep feeling, of ability to subjectify himself, of the gift, in a word, that raises man nearer to God than any, save inspiration, our race has every enjoyed.
