The opiate antagonist naloxone blocks both stimulation-produced analgesia from brain stimulation and analgesia from stimulation of acupuncture points, thus suggesting that a descending pain system able to inhibit pain perception can be associated with the endorphinergic pathway in the brain and spinal cord.
