Craven's 1874 poem was reprinted several times, the last being in 1952. By the early to mid twentieth century, the folk song about Omie Wise was widely known. Variants have turned up in poetry, prose, and song in numerous sources. Tragedies sung about a girl named variously Naoma, Naomi, Omie, Oma, Omi, Ona, Oni, Loni, etc., have been collected throughout the South.
