A brass of a knight of the Cuttes family in Arkesdon church, Essex (1410), is a good example of what may be termed the development of épaulières into pauldrons. Passe-gardes, generally applied to 'Maximilian' armour, are really to be found occasionally much earlier, as an example in Southerly church (1479) shows. The Beauchamp brass figure at Warwick (1439) shows the passe-garde, but the general character of the armor indicates a later date of make.

On 31st July 1990 seven plants of a small felwort, Gentianella amarella (L.) Boerner, were discovered by the writer growing in short, sheep-grazed Festuca – Sesleria grassland at Kettlewell. Unlike our usual felwort which has blue flowers, these plants had the corolla white on the inside with a maroon outer surface and fitted exactly the description of Gentianella amarella ssp. septentrionalis (Druce) N. Pritch. This determination was subsequently confirmed by Dr Noel Pritchard, BSBI referee for Gentianaceae.

One Sunday print, more daring than the rest, placarded the blank walls in the metropolis with pea-green hand-bills, promising an extra sheet, to contain the biography of the supposed assassin of the Queen; to which a rival responded by an advertisement in Gothic characters a foot high, of “Confession of the Assassin.” / If I did not commit reginicide, I was uncommonly near committing felo-de-se!

The Meteor, Group Captain [Hugh Joseph] Wilson said, puts its nose up at the shock stall, so that had the aircraft become fully shock stalled during the record runs, the pilot would probably have been able to recover without hitting the sea. But at the speeds achieved—the fastest run recorded being 983 kilometers or 611 m.p.h.—only parts of the Meteor (for instance, the area over the wind screen) were shock stalled.
