The embrace of Zen was fed from three sources: the returning G. I.’s who had experienced Asian culture while serving in the Pacific theatre; the writings of such Zen populisers as Daisetz Suzuki and Alan Watts; and the growing Asian-American population, especially on the West coast, that had brought with them, or carried down, inherited religious sensibilities.
