Sapir left the series with #34 or 35 to write "bestsellers", only one of which, THE FAR ARENA, had any success. Murphy didn't feel like doing the Destroyer series all by himself, so he hired a bunch of people to ghost-write novels, which he'd then do a final draft on to consistify the style.
