The poorly fossiliferous lower redbeds of the Yangtze Platform Silurian sequence, the Rongxi Formation, have long presented a serious correlation problem. However, with the discovery in Ningqiang County, Shaanxi, that the laterally- equivalent Wangjiawan Formation contains a useful graptolitic and shelly fauna, this problem has been satisfactorily resolved.
