In 1703 Peter ordered the construction of the Vyshnii Volochek Canal, a 2-mile passage to connect the Tversta river (an outbranch of the Volga) and the Msta (on which a transit to the Neva could be made via Lake Ilmen, the Volkhov, and Lake Ladoga).
The picture below dates to about 1860 and shows the Point not too many years after the construction of the Long Dock, seen here as a strip of built-up roadway just wide enough for two horsedrawn wagons to pass each other.
The knee-length mail shirt was called a hauberk or habergeon. But these shirts of mail didn't protect the legs. So, during the twelfth century, many soldiers began wearing mail pieces attached by leather on the front of their legs.
