We made reweighings and remeasurings of deliveries made by peddlers […]
Even the jolly menials of the consumer world who were always romanticized in older advertising (the admiring butler, the compliant porter, the beloved Philip Morris bellboy) are lampooned in one 1970 American Tourister television commercial: a suitcase is tossed into a zoo cage, snatched up by a particularly violent ape who snorts and growls and smashes it about. Meanwhile, a placid announcer speaks of savage baggagemasters, clumsy bellboys, brutal cab drivers, and all butter-fingered luggage handlers all over the world. While in earlier spots such humble figures would have been rendered in friendly terms, here they are compared to apes.

Women work in an Etles silk mill in Jiya Town of Hotan City, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Aug. 8, 2017. Etles silk, with a history of more than a thousand years in Hotan City, is regarded as the witness of the cultural mixture between China and the neighboring countries as it illustrates a perfect combination of Chinese silk production technique and surrounding central Asian countries' patterning. The production of the Eltes silk is now regaining its momentum as the local government invests more resources into the sector to revive the once vanishing craft. About 6,000 families in the Jiya Town are capable of producing the silk which brings 1,200 yuan (about 180 US dollars) extra income per capita for the local residents.
This includes an infrared spectroscope that has been used to figure out the chemical fingerprints of things as varied as asteroids and illegal drugs; a device called a microfadeometer, which trains an intense beam of light — 8 million lumens per square meter, compared with about 120,000 for a cloudless day with the sun at high noon — on a tiny area of a painting to see how it fades; a hulking Atlas Ci4000 Xenon Weather-Ometer, which simulates the effects of decades of sunlight and heat in just months; and a scanning electron microscope costing more than a million dollars.
