もし若者が知恵を持っていたなら，もし老人に（若者のような）行動力があったなら（どんなによいだろうに）という意味のことわざ。若さには経験と知恵がなく，老いには肉体的な力がないという人生の皮肉を表す。
英語の意味
youth is wasted on the young, you can't put an old head on young shoulders (it's too bad that young people lack the experience and wisdom which only come with age; likewise, it's a pity that old people lack the physical wherewithal to take full advantage of their experience and wisdom)
